FAQ

Will Classic addons work in WoW Forever?
Most will need to be remade. Blizzard confirmed via the WoW UI Discord that Forever shares Mainline's UI architecture (the 12.1.5 API set), and Classic-era addons were built for the old Classic API. Midnight-era Retail addons should port over far more easily.
Do the Midnight addon restrictions apply in WoW Forever?
Yes. Blizzard's UI team stated that the Midnight addon disarmament changes — including secret values — are active in Forever, alongside the 12.1 AuraContainer and AuraButton changes. Blizzard also told Kotaku that computational addons will be restricted.
Will WeakAuras work in WoW Forever?
No. WeakAuras halted development before Midnight because of the API changes, and Blizzard's statement gives it no path back — every Forever addon must target the new API. Boss-mod-style tools face the same rewrite, minus whatever the disarmament rules forbid.
Does WoW Forever have a Classic-style UI?
The demo showed a newer, more retail-like HUD, but a BlizzCon hands-on tester confirmed you can customize it to look like Classic yourself. Blizzard also confirmed a graphics toggle between updated and original visuals.
Do I need addons to play WoW Forever?
No. Forever is built on the Classic foundation with its own redesigned HUD, and none of the launch features announced so far require an addon. Quest logs, maps and other conveniences are being reworked in-game.

Will my Classic addons work in WoW Forever?

The answer arrived on September 16, 2026, and it is mostly bad news for the Classic addon library: Forever runs on Mainline’s UI architecture, not Classic’s. Blizzard’s UI team stated on the WoW UI Discord that Forever shares “the vast majority of APIs available in 12.1.5” — the Midnight-era API set — and that the addon disarmament changes introduced in Midnight, including secret values, will be active in Forever. Practically, that means Classic-era addons do not simply load: their authors must rebuild them against the new API, while addons already updated for Midnight should port over far more easily. The beta that opened September 17 is where the first real compatibility list gets written.

What Blizzard has actually confirmed

Four facts are now official, sourced from the BlizzCon 2026 panels, the game’s overview, and the two developer statements that landed after it:

  • A new, modernized HUD ships with Forever. Panel footage shows unit frames, bags and action bars that look closer to Retail than to 2004 — and you can customize it toward the Classic look, per a BlizzCon demo tester.
  • Forever shares Mainline’s UI architecture. Per the WoW UI Discord: “WoW Forever shares Mainline WoW’s UI architecture, including the vast majority of APIs available in 12.1.5” — internally the two are “two game types within the Mainline code family.” Future UI changes are expected to land in both games.
  • The Midnight disarmament applies in full. Secret values, the 12.1.0 AuraContainer/AuraButton changes and the rest of the disarmament package are active in Forever. Blizzard’s stated goal — addons should not provide a competitive advantage — carries over with it.
  • Computational addons will be restricted. In a Kotaku interview, lead classic designer Tim Jones and lead encounter designer Mike Nuthals confirmed computational addons (the ones that solve combat math for you) will be limited.

None of this is a “no addons” verdict — it is a “new API, new rules” verdict. It also explains why Blizzard is treating the default UI as a first-class feature: the more the stock UI does, the less Forever needs — or allows — third-party overlays.

What this means for your favorite addons

  • WeakAuras is not coming back. It halted development before Midnight because of the API changes, and the WoW UI Discord statement offers no route back — every Forever addon targets the new API. Plan your UI around what the default HUD plus surviving addons can do.
  • Classic addons will likely need remaking. Addons built for WoW: Classic target the old API; the statement says many will need to be remade. If your must-have is a small Classic-era quality-of-life tool, its author now has a real porting job.
  • Midnight addons are the good bet. Addons already rebuilt for Midnight “can likely be ported over more easily” — the two games share the API family, so the Retail-adjacent ecosystem is the one to watch.
  • The forums’ bigger fear just got partially answered. Threads like “Forever Addons” and “Addon Restrictions?” asked not just whether addons work but which should be allowed. The disarmament-plus-computational-limits answer is now on the record; what remains unknown is the beta-tested reality.

How to prepare before you log in to the beta

The beta opened September 17 — here is how to turn the API news into a practical plan:

  1. Back up your Classic Era WTF folder — the saved-variables directory holding your addon profiles. Settings rarely survive an API generation change, but the backup is free.
  2. Re-sort your shortlist by likelihood of port. For each must-have addon, ask: was it updated for Midnight (good odds), is it a Classic-only tool (rewrite needed), or is it a computational/WeakAuras-style overlay (restricted or gone)? That triage turns “will addons work” into a testable beta checklist.
  3. Follow addon authors, not rumors. The first credible compatibility reports will come from authors posting builds or disclaimers on day one of the beta — not from “Forever addon pack” installers, which remain a scam vector.
  4. Opt in to the beta. The beta guide explains both access routes: the free opt-in and the pre-purchase packs that guarantee a slot. Our tools and community roundup lists the trackers to watch.

The honest state of play
