How do you start and complete the Book Return quest?
Pick it up from Marshal Dughan in Goldshire, collect six Lost Books plus the “Picture Book: Fun with Elementals” from Fargodeep Mine, and bring everything back to him in the provided Book Bag. Wowhead’s Forever database lists the quest as level 6, Elite, both factions, paying out 680 experience and 100 Stormwind reputation. It is the seventh step of the reworked eight-quest Elwynn Forest chain — Blizzard rebuilt this corner of the starting world for the new game, and the book hunt is its centerpiece.
Where do you find the Lost Books?
The quest description points you into Fargodeep Mine, the kobold tunnel system southwest of Goldshire, while your character is already investigating the mine for the surrounding chain. Brother Paxton’s missing books are scattered through the depths, and the one he is most worried about — “Fun with Elementals” — carries the quest’s actual tension: he fears even a kobold could use it to summon an elemental servant. You are given a Book Bag when you accept the quest to carry the finds back safely.
Exact spawn locations shift as beta patches rework the mine, and the community is still cataloguing them on the Wowhead quest page. What is stable: everything happens inside Elwynn Forest, the mine is the only dungeon-style crawl in the chain, and the elite flag means the kobold depth encounters can overwhelm an unprepared level 6.

Do you need a group for Book Return?
Plan on one — or at least on caution. The quest is flagged Elite in the database, the difficulty band runs up to level 9, and the quest text itself tells you “the depths of the mine are fairly dangerous. You should bring friends.” Solo players in the beta complete it with careful pulling and consumables, but it is the first genuinely dangerous content many new characters meet, and it previews the group expectations of the reworked dungeon and raid track.
What are the rewards?
| Reward | Amount |
|---|---|
| Experience | 680 XP |
| Reputation | 100 with Stormwind |
| Money | 2 50 (2 silver, 50 copper) |
The Book Bag itself is the provided item, not a permanent reward. The XP is the meaningful part of the payout — 680 is a solid chunk of a level in the 5-8 range, which is exactly where the chain expects you to be.
What is the full Elwynn quest chain around it?
Book Return is step seven of eight in the reworked chain tracked on Wowhead:
| Step | Quest |
|---|---|
| 1 | Nibbled-On Book |
| 2 | Rascally Rodents |
| 3 | Mining Consultant |
| 4 | The Big Picture |
| 5 | Follow That Kobold! |
| 6 | Shhh! We’re Hunting Kobolds |
| 7 | Book Return |
| 8 | Rare Books |
The chain runs from the Abbey’s chewed-books mystery through kobold clearing to the mine crawl and its rare-books finale. Search traffic clusters on “book return” because it is the step players hit while actually inside the mine — the point where the chain stops being fetch quests and starts being a fight.
Is this the same quest as 'Return the Book' in Tirisfal Glades?
No — and mixing them up is common. Return the Book is a Horde level 8 quest in Tirisfal Glades that has existed since the Classic era: Bethor Iceshard in Undercity gives you Gunther’s Spellbook to deliver to Gunther Arcanus on his retreat island, paying 350 XP and Undercity reputation. It is part of the five-step Prodigal Lich chain. The Elwynn Book Return covered here is the new patch 1.60.1 addition built for the reworked human starting experience.
Is this the same as the Library book hand-in system?
No — that is a third “return books” thing, and the beta mixes people up the most with it. The Library book collection is a world-wide beta activity: overdue Library Books scattered around Azeroth can be handed to your Faction Librarian — Alliance: Garion Wendell in Stormwind’s Mage Tower (/way 49.0 86.4); Horde: Owen Thadd in Undercity’s Magic Quarter (/way 74.0 32.4) — for turn-in quests at 10, 20 and 25 books. The October build unlocked the 25-book tier at level 30, paying item level 45 rewards (Truthseeker’s Bow, Crest of Elucidation or Researcher’s Night Light — the latter two require level 40), while the 10-book necklace rewards were nerfed from Rare to Uncommon quality. It shares the book theme with the Elwynn quest covered on this page, but nothing else — if you are hunting Fargodeep Mine at level 6, your books go back to Marshal Dughan, not a librarian.
Why is this quest suddenly popular?
Because the beta moved the goalposts. Forever’s reworked Elwynn Forest layers new chains and elite objectives over the zone everyone has memorized for twenty years, and players leveling human characters in the beta hit Book Return blind. If you are returning to Azeroth after years away, the returning player guide covers what else has changed before launch on the November 4 date, and the character creation decisions determine whether you even start in Elwynn or on the Skyborne’s island.
