How WoW Forever rulesets replace traditional realms: grouping limits, faction boundaries, Hardcore status, what the Roleplay ruleset is, and account rules.

FAQ

Does WoW Forever have traditional realms?
No. Blizzard says Forever is realmless and asks players to choose a ruleset rather than select from a list of traditional realms.
Can players group across WoW Forever rulesets?
No. Blizzard says cross-ruleset grouping is not supported, and Horde and Alliance remain unable to group together.

Which WoW Forever ruleset should you choose?

Choose a WoW Forever ruleset for the experience you want, not for a named server. Blizzard’s realmless model offers Normal, PvP, and Roleplaying at launch, with Hardcore after launch. You can group and raid only with players in your own ruleset and faction, so this decision matters more than a cosmetic community label.

How do Normal, PvP, Roleplaying, and Hardcore differ?

Blizzard describes Normal as cooperation-focused with consensual PvP, PvP as a riskier contested-world option, and Roleplaying as a home for players who want a deeper fantasy focus. Hardcore arrives after launch and treats death as a lasting consequence.

RulesetOfficial descriptionGrouping expectation
NormalBaseline cooperative experience; PvP requires mutual consentSame ruleset and faction only
PvPMore danger and world conflict in contested territorySame ruleset and faction only
RoleplayingFor players seeking like-minded roleplay adventurersSame ruleset and faction only
HardcorePost-launch, high-stakes rules with lasting death consequencesFully enclosed ecosystem

For timing and one-life details, read the dedicated Hardcore mode guide. The release-date guide tracks the published launch timeline rather than repeating it here.

What is the WoW Forever RP ruleset?

The Roleplaying ruleset is one of the three launch rulesets, listed by Blizzard alongside Normal and PvP — Hardcore is the one that comes later. The official description is short: a home for players who want a deeper fantasy focus. Structurally it behaves like every other ruleset — you group only inside the RP ruleset and your own faction, and collections and Legacy Points remain account-wide under the rules above.

What actually separates RP from Normal is self-selection, not confirmed mechanics: Blizzard has not published dedicated roleplay enforcement tools, so whether launch brings RP-specific naming policies, moderation hooks, or optional in-character markers is still an open question (tracked in the table below). The practical launch picture is a Normal-style world whose population has chosen the fantasy-first label for itself.

Available at launch?Yes — listed with Normal and PvP
Grouping scopeSame ruleset and faction only
Account-wide collections and Legacy PointsYes, same as the other rulesets
RP-specific enforcement or naming toolsNot published

Rolling an RP character? The two-part name system gives you a natural in-character handle — the character creation guide walks through it — and the Hardcore mode guide covers the one ruleset that genuinely plays by different rules.

What carries between rulesets?

Blizzard says collections and Legacy Points are account-wide across rulesets, with Hardcore treated as the exception. Accomplishments made in Hardcore can become available elsewhere, but progress from other rulesets does not flow into Hardcore. This preserves the isolated nature of the one-life mode.

Progress typeCross-ruleset directionNotes
CollectionsAccount-wide in the normal modelCheck Hardcore exceptions
Legacy PointsShared across alts and rulesetsHardcore remains protected from outside progress
Group accessNot sharedCross-ruleset groups are unsupported
Faction groupingNot sharedHorde and Alliance stay separate

The Legacy system guide explains how points are earned and spent without confusing that account system with a ruleset choice.

How should you make the choice before creating a character?

The safest approach is to choose based on who you expect to play with and the risk level you want.

  1. Confirm your friends’ intended ruleset and faction before finalizing a character.
  2. Pick Normal for consensual PvP, PvP for persistent contested-world stakes, or Roleplaying for that community focus.
  3. Treat Hardcore as a separate commitment because it launches later and keeps its own protected ecosystem.
  4. Use the character creation guide to plan names, class, and race after the ruleset decision.

What has Blizzard not detailed yet?

The official panel establishes the boundaries, but players still need more operational detail.
