FAQ

Can I pre-download WoW Forever?
Yes, in practice. Blizzard's official pre-launch checklist installs World of Warcraft: Forever as a Game Version in the Battle.net app, and players have been pulling it down ahead of launch (about 12 GB of data, community-reported; Blizzard has not published a Forever-specific size). There is no separate installer.
How do I install WoW Forever?
Open the Battle.net desktop app, select World of Warcraft, pick World of Warcraft: Forever in the Game Version menu above the Play button, then select Install. That is Blizzard's own pre-launch sequence for name reservation and launch — there is no separate Forever installer.
How much storage does WoW Forever need?
Blizzard's system requirements ask for a 128GB SSD with that space available for World of Warcraft, and a Forever-specific install size has not been published. The full hardware breakdown is in the system requirements guide.
When can I download WoW Forever?
The client is downloadable now through Battle.net. Character creation opens with Early Name Reservation on October 27 (Heroic Pack or higher), and the game unlocks at launch, November 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. Pacific. The beta — the only earlier way to play — closed October 23.
Do I need to buy WoW Forever to download it?
No. Forever is included with an active subscription or Game Time, just like Classic — no separate purchase, no expansion to buy. The pre-purchase packs add perks such as Early Name Reservation eligibility and the Skyborne race, not the game itself.

How do you download WoW Forever?

Through the client you already have. World of Warcraft: Forever is not a standalone game with its own installer — it ships inside the normal World of Warcraft client on Battle.net, and Blizzard’s own product page lists exactly four requirements: a WoW subscription or active game time, a Battle.net account, the Battle.net desktop app, and an internet connection. There is no separate Forever download listed anywhere, and no Forever-specific purchase: the game is included with the same subscription that covers Retail and Classic Era.

The install itself is now officially documented. Blizzard’s pre-launch checklist for name reservation reads: make sure your graphics drivers are up to date, open the Battle.net desktop app and let it update, select World of Warcraft from your game list, pick World of Warcraft: Forever in the Game Version menu above the Play button, then select Install. Once installation completes, Play and choose your Ruleset. The practical pre-launch sequence:

  1. Install the Battle.net desktop app and select World of Warcraft: Forever as a Game Version — that installation is the download.
  2. Keep the subscription active (or hold Game Time) through launch day — November 4, 2026, 3:00 p.m. Pacific, 6:00 p.m. Eastern.
  3. Create your characters early if you qualify — Early Name Reservation opens October 27 (details below).
  4. Update the client when patches arrive. Launch-day updates flow through the same Game Version entry.

Can you pre-download or pre-load WoW Forever?

Yes — this is no longer speculation. Blizzard’s own “Prepare to Launch” checklist (published October 20 with the name-reservation announcement) walks players into Battle.net and has them install World of Warcraft: Forever as a Game Version before Early Name Reservation opens on October 27, which only makes sense if the files are downloadable ahead of launch day. Players confirm the entry downloads in the Battle.net launcher — roughly 12 GB of data, community-reported, with some players needing to close the Retail WoW install first to start the download. Blizzard has not published a Forever-specific install size, so treat the 12 GB figure as a report, not a spec.

What Blizzard has not published is a traditional “pre-patch”: a dated client-update row between beta close and launch. The release-date calendar goes from Early Name Reservation (October 27 – November 3) straight to launch on November 4 — but since the Forever Game Version is already in Battle.net, the practical effect players cared about (installing before servers open) is already covered. Any further client updates between now and launch will flow through the same entry, and the release date timeline is where a formal pre-patch row would appear if Blizzard adds one.

When can you create characters?

October 27 — for players who own the Heroic Pack or higher. Early Name Reservation runs October 27 through November 3: eligible players can create up to three characters across all Rulesets and lock their names, first come, first served (Blizzard explicitly says desired names cannot be guaranteed). Regional start times: 1:00 p.m. PDT in North America, 6:00 p.m. CET in Europe, and 7:00 a.m. on October 28 in Korea and Taiwan. The character creation guide covers what you can set up, and the rulesets guide explains the Normal / PvP / RP / Hardcore split you pick at that screen — note that the Roleplay-PvP Ruleset arrives with launch and is planned to be selectable during the reservation window too.

Everyone else creates characters at launch, November 4, when the same creation flow opens for all subscribers.

Whatever happened to the beta install route?

The beta — the only install-and-play route before launch — is closed. It ran September 17 through October 23, 2026, closing at 10:00 a.m. PDT after a 24-hour in-game celebration. Its final act was an October 21 stress test that moved WoW Forever onto its proper regional hardware for a few hours per region; any player with a WoW account could join, no subscription needed, by installing the “World of Warcraft: Forever Stress Test” Game Version in Battle.net. All stress test characters were deleted afterward. If you still have the beta entry in your Battle.net list, the launch client above supersedes it — and the beta access guide keeps the full record of how access worked, including which pre-purchase tiers carried beta codes.

What does your machine need before you install?

The download is only half the preparation — the hardware bar is already published, and it is stricter than old Classic muscle memory expects. The short version: a 128GB SSD with that space available, 8GB RAM, a DirectX 12-capable 4GB GPU and a 4-core 3.0 GHz Haswell-or-Zen-class CPU on Windows 10 or newer; Mac players need an Apple M2 (or Intel Coffee Lake) chip on macOS 12. Blizzard also enforces a separate GPU architecture floor (AMD GCN 1, NVIDIA Maxwell, Intel Skylake or newer) that is below the full minimum spec — passing one check does not guarantee passing the other.

The complete side-by-side tables, both checks and the upgrade advice that follows from them, live in the system requirements guide.

Coming back to WoW for this?

If you are returning after years away and the whole Battle.net flow feels rusty, the returning player checklist covers subscription, install and day-one decisions in order — and once the client is patched and ready, the addons setup guide is the usual next stop.
